England v Czech Republic: Match Preview

England face Czech Republic in their final Euro 2020 Group D match.

Both teams are on four points going into the final round of matches having won one and drawn one. They are both pretty much through to the knockout stages unless one team loses and Scotland win convincingly, however if that does happen both teams have a chance of going through as one of the four best third placed teams.

A draw will confirm both sides place in the last 16 and a win for either side will mean they top the group and will play the runners-up from Group F. While the runners up from Group D will play the runners-up in Group E.

Excitement and hope has increased after England’s win against Croatia and the attacking options England have. However, the optimism among England fans has lowered after Friday’s 0-0 draw against Scotland and England’s past performances at major tournaments.

Team News

Gareth Southgate has indicated that Harry Kane will start against Czech Republic. Kane hasn’t had a shot on target in the opening two group games, and was substituted off in both the 1-0 win over Croatia and Friday’s goalless draw with Scotland.

Southgate could once again rotate the full-backs, while Harry Maguire is pushing for a start – but successive clean sheets mean Tyrone Mings and John Stones may continue at centre-back.

Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson and even Jack Grealish to an extent are returning from injuries and are building their fitness up. Phil Foden will miss England’s next game if he receives another booking.

All 26 England Players and the wider support team tested negative in the latest round of UEFA PCR testing on Sunday. The full squad trained at Tottenham’s training ground on this morning (Monday) – despite this Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell will be isolating after coming into contact with Scottish player, Billy Gilmour, who has recently tested positive.

Czech Republic have no fresh injury concerns to contend with for their final group game. Boril, Hlozek and Masopus will miss Czech Republic’s next game if they receive another booking.
